Vamos al América del Sur

Posted on February 6, 2024June 6, 2025 by Lilith

It’s been a long time since I’ve posted anything on this (or any) blog. I actually wanted to change that with the bike tour to the North Cape last year, but posting updates on Instagram was always exhausting enough in the evenings. For this tour, however, I’ve decided to at least post a short update and photos here from time to time – it doesn’t happen too often that you cycle through South America 😱😍

I’m currently on the plane to Buenos Aires, and from there I’m taking another flight to Ushuaia, all the way south. Together with Sebi from Switzerland, who I met on the bike tour to the North Cape, I’ll be cycling north from there for the next three months or so. Starting in Argentina, then across the border to Chile, along the Carretera Austral and on towards Santiago. After that would be the Atacama Desert and/or northwest Argentina at some point, but we’ll see how far we’ll actually make it 🙂

Booking the bike as special baggage in advance wasn’t possible because the communication between the two airlines didn’t work. That meant that in Zurich airport we would have to hope that there will still be some space and that it won’t cost a fortune… Fortunately, after a few phone calls at check-in, everything was sorted and we were promised that the bikes would be taken to Ushuaia (without us having to do anything). The first change in Rome went smoothly and with the AirTags in the box we could see that they were at least at the correct airport. When we arrived in Buenos Aires, we passed the baggage claim, through customs and over to the national terminal, when I suddenly received a text message from the airline saying that we had forgotten to collect our luggage 🤦‍♀️😄

At the next best information desk we asked if that was true, they sent us back to International Arrivals, to other employees, we were escorted all the way back through customs and back to the baggage carousel and then had to queue again with the bikes at check-in…. 😬

In the end, we landed safely and found our way to the Airbnb with our luggage and bikes. We now have two more days to organize things, reassemble the bikes and do a bit of sightseeing before we finally set off 🙂

Made it!
Landing in Ushuaia
Aerolineas Argentinas saving our day with their Whatsapp-Service..
AirBnb with enough space for all our chaos 😀
